I decided to read an excerpt from the novel 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami in the basement of Cyert Hall. The first recording was done with the microphone placed on a desk about a couple inches away from my mouth. It allowed for the clear recording of my voice as I read the excerpt from the story. There was little interference from outside noises because the main source (my voice) was closer to the microphone to drown out the other sounds. However, when I moved the microphone a couple feet away towards the far left, the microphone picked up other sounds including my voice. In one trial recording, the voices in the room next door could be heard and distracted me from reading at one point.
