The audio was definitely clearer and of better quality when the microphone was held closer. When it was even only a yard farther back, the volume of the resulting recording was diminished noticeably and ambient sounds became much more overpowering. One qualm about having the microphone closer is that it made the sound maybe a little too piercing. But this is a small gripe, and having the microphone closer improved the sound in almost every way.
