Our first iteration of the project occurred as a mock up 3D model in Rhinoceros. Upon making the prototype in Rhino there were several iterations of laser cutting the same pieces developed in the model to assume that the sleekness of the design and degree to which everything fit flush with one another was achieved.
Components such as the front cover in white acrylic was cute several times and arranged differently in three instances to accommodate for a clear, well composed front piece that could provide all necessary components and buttons in an intuitive way. For example, the holes for the speaker were rearranged from their original rectangular shape to the circular one to provide more room between cover components.
In terms of the earbud pop-up piece, the original idea was to integrate a solenoid. However as we wanted a clear means of brining up the earbuds with the press of a button then back down with another press, smoothly, we instead opted for a mechanism that involved a servo rotating a gear with a shaft that would push up the earbud piece vertically.
