Atop an elevated mound of earth, two planes define a henge; a space apart from the surrounding environment. From the floor plane transparent slabs rise into the air, reaching toward the upper plane. Other slabs hang, as if floating, from the ceiling, mirroring those protruding from the ground. Framed between these rising and hanging slabs stand columns, bridging the ground and the ceiling. Each of these slabs is transparent, with a design etched into it. These designs vary in their form, but each is representative of a part of existence. Mind, body, soul. Birth, death, life. Sky, earth, man. Each triumvirate has an elevated, grounded, and bridging element, respectively. Each of these elements are reflected in the position of its slab. In each vista, these elements of the world are framed so that a viewer might reflect about each in relation to the other. Throughout this space, as each element is illuminated by lights from above and below, a sonic performance representative of the currently illuminated vista plays from speakers nearby.
Our Mediahenge is an experiment in immersive, monumental, media architecture. Through graphics, lights, and sound we intended to provide the viewer with a spiritual experience that connects them with some of the basic elements of our universe.
