Transcending inhabits a transitory space. It is what introduces people to the wacky warehouse of projects, and it is what people see when they leave. It is located in a semi-corridor, semi-vestibule, semi-staircase, that is normally wasted space. It is an appendage to the larger gallery, an important threshold, and an architectural element in its own right. As such, we saw it as separate from the gallery, and separate from the outside.
In an effort to make the space itself more visible, we are attempting to project into 3D in such a way that the light forms are spatialized. This means that some visual projections are in mid-air as opposed to flat against the walls. The material the projection projects onto (in mid-air) also becomes almost invisible in the low-light environment that this exists in. This creates an immersive lighting design that fully occupies the vestibule.
Our project lives in its own space. It is an active light field responsive to its inhabitants. As our light becomes more spatialized, the vestibule is made more significant as a container for it.
