With the internet, communication becomes instantaneous, and therefore, media grows immense in volume. While social media demands the attention of the individual, its saturation makes it easy for the individual to become desensitized to the noise. Throughout the course of a day, I see media in the form of social media, art, and local events, and yet, by its very nature as a pervasive medium, I have grown blind to its demands.
The media I consume is that of information and artistry. I find the use of social media for sharing the curiosities of a single person’s day-to-day life purposeless. With that criterion in mind, I already throw away half of the information transmitted through the internet. Reddit and deviantART are websites that provide a steady stream of new information. The more information and art I absorb, however, the more I know and the less the remaining media interests me. While I have drawn on social media as a reservoir of interest when my mind requires sharpening, the information it holds grows more tepid.
Ultimately, media can act as an unwarranted obsession; it provides an escape from schoolwork, but the detour may act as distraction from my studies without any boon in return. Its very appeal as a constant source of information makes it intolerable when I demand more from it.
