Social media today has an untold effect on the way we communicate and network with one another. Effectively, a social network allows us to interface with other humans more flexibly and efficiently than in face to face conversation, at the cost of intimacy. Facebook in particular seems to want to deliver a very particular experience to users, trying to be as close as possible to conversing in the same room. This is particularly evident from how Facebook highly encourages one to using a photo with their actual face in their profile picture. Essentially, this profile picture is the 'face' of any online persona, and it plays a large part of how a person is judged online.
