Artist

The artist I’ve been assigned to is Jackson Pollock. He’s a major artist in the abstract expressionist movement and is famous for his drip paintings. Before 1940s, he worked in the Regionalist style and was influenced by Surrealism. Some critics believe Pollock’s style is somewhat linked to his tough early life and his volatile personality, he is a heavy drinker. His “drip and splash” style was introduced in the mid 1940s. As Pollock said in 1956, “My painting does not come from the easel.” Instead of putting the canvas on the easel, Pollock laid out his canvases on the floor or against, the wall. And he seldom used ordinary waiting tools, instead he used sticks, towels and knives. When drawing, he moved around the canvas and dripped and splashed as if he is dancing around the canvas. This style of painting detached line from color and redefined pictorial space.
