Outcome

Intention

I wanted to portray One-Punch Man as a serious show. Most of the moments in this show are serious for around 2 seconds before reverting back to comedy, so I wanted to compile the serious moments into a dramatic mashup / supercut (mostly of Saitama destroying monsters and people). One-Punch Man is not serious at all. My motivation was that I had only read the comic, and this project would let me have an excuse to watch the show as well.

Product

I created a video to showcase only the badass moments in One-Punch Man to make it seem like Saitama is a serious character in a serious TV show about superheroes and saving civilians. I used epic music to emphasize the fact that a lot of lives are at stake, and what Saitama is doing is a good deed to society.

Context

I was inspired by the spring teen chick flick comedy trailer that Thewlis Rox made, which portrayed the Harry Potter series as a romantic chick flick rather than a series where many people die.

I wanted to do the same for OPM but in reverse because it is mostly a funny show. Therefore, I decided to just find some epic music and take awesome moments from the show and make them into a video.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to do a supercut or an anime music video, so I decided to do a mix of both because of the storyline of OPM. It seemed to match both styles of videos.

Process

I had to first watch the episodes of OPM that were released (6 episodes). When I decided what kind of video I wanted to make, I tried to load the .mkv files into Sony Vegas Pro, but they didn't work, so I had to download ffmpeg to convert them into .mp4 files.

At first I wanted to use "1 min Special Epic Music Collection V," but it was only 1 minute long and I didn't think it was enough to make OPM seem like a serious show. So after trying to align two clips from the anime, I changed to "Two Steps from Hell - Heart of Courage" because it was slightly longer and gave me more freedom with placing more clips.

If I had more time, I would probably add more effects to the video, but because I didn't, I focused mainly on matching the videos to the beat of the song. I did add the effect of when Saitama punched the other guy in the crotch  -- I changed the color to emphasize the moment. I personally found it extremely funny.

Reflection

I think I made something beautiful in the sense that the beats matched the video pretty well. I also think I conveyed that OPM is a serious show pretty well. However, I think I might have wanted to do another concept (maybe more funny).

Video editing takes a lot of time to rewatch what I made and make edits. However, because I didn't have enough time, I don't think I was able to do my concept justice. If I were to do it differently, I would probably focus more on the effects and create an entirely different storyline/plot. In a sense, I did create a different narrative because I removed the comedic parts of One-Punch Man and made it into a serious thing. However, there's this feeling at the back of my mind that I wanted to do more with it.
