Digital clocks embedded into appliances are a classic example of calm technology. They satisfy the requirements of calm technology: they exist in the user's periphery yet are accessible when the user seeks them out. While this example is not particularly revolutionary, it's a good reminder that calm technologies don't have to be spectacular or abstract. One could argue that the glowing green light of the display pushes the clock to the edges of calm technology, but I would reason that it doesn't pull your attention in the same way a screen would. In some ways, an analog clock is an even calmer version of a digital clock. A member of an older generation might argue with me, but a digital clock is more easily readable than an analog clock; the mind doesn't have to make a translation. In some cases, a technology may be made so calm, it's meaning is lost or unnecessarily obscured.
