Outcome

Intention

Write about the big ideas behind your project? What are the goals? Why did you make it? What are your motivations?

For this skills investigation, I wanted to explore how to create various sensors using knitting. I wanted to create a reference sheet for my sample book for a record of the different techniques used.  I was interested in the different flexible conductive materials that were introduced in our soft circuits demo and how knitting can create objects to size.  By creating this project, I am combining these concepts to explore various sensors that can be built. This will be useful for my interests in exploring wearable technology.

Process + Product

Detail what you created. What methods or techniques did you use? What tools and technologies were involved? Include images, code or video.

The focus for this project was on knit sensors that responded to stretching motions. In research I made on this subject, many were made out of jersey knits. I wanted to use hand knitting as a way to incorporate the conductive material into the final product more seamlessly. The different samples I wanted to make includes varying the yarn thickness along with strands of conductive yarn. By altering these two variables, the changes of resistance can be recorded and be an important part of the reference sheet.

The materials I used for this project include various wool and acrylic yarns and conductive thread. The equipment I used were knitting needles of different sizes.

Reflection

Reflect on the process of making this project. What did you learn? What would you do differently?
