Statement

Why take the morning rush to work so seriously? A moment for a smile and a moment for pause before taking on the day’s challenges can be so revitalizing and that’s my mindset in the mornings that I want to propagate with my project. For this reason, I am keen on spreading bigger than human size smiling flower sculptures that are actually delicious, healthy drink dispensing booths. When a work of art can survive more than one function when entering a money making realm, the more effects the better, and my Flower Stand project certainly is a multi-tasker.

Context

The flower stands from which our teas can be purchased are works of art themselves, sculptures that draw inspiration from the works of Ana Tzarev (the flower stands will stand in multiple locations), Jeff Koons (the flower stands will have an inflated quality that makes them seem bigger than their height could), and Takashi Murakami (the flower stands’ flower top is based of Murakami’s designs).

Process

The main questions I asked myself before starting the project were form, presence, purpose, engagement, and how it will make money. In establishing the design of my project I wanted to address this points clearly. I wanted the form to seem perpetually expanding and not contained so for this reason I thought along the lines of a balloon which with air expands. Balloons made me think of Koons. I wanted the sculptures to exist en masse, such that the art lies in their multitude and not with an individual fixture, so I thought of sculptures part of a series and urban art. I remembered a summer in Budapest when decorated cow sculptures were scattered across the city and researched artists with similar methods. Tzarev was an interesting match. Lastly the vibrancy and vitality of Murakami’s faces was a distinct aspiration I knew I wanted to incorporate.

Product

The product is a monument, a landmark. Each Flower Stand will serve as an epicenter for happiness, pull, enjoyment, and revitalization. This role of a center is headfirst focalized by the circle that is the flower’s head. A gaping smile is the summation. The rest of the Flower Stand is integrated with technology such that people are continuously allowed to approached the work and touch it, even getting something from it. It is the most fruitful exchange of services and needs.

Critique

The work seems to have potential for making money but visually, has very little bearing on my originality and creative abilities. Although it will accomplish my goal for creating “green spaces” in cities, I’m not sure how well the Flower Stand fits into the intended scenes where it is meant to stand. Of course there is no guarantee customers will flock to buy tea from it, so the work’s money making potency is also not as strong as could be.

Personal Reflection

I have not realized the many layers of consideration and interrelation that have thus far entered into my project’s process. Even the artist’s from who I’m stealing methods play a role in my project. I have learned more about informed decisions.
