Outcome

Statement

Dancing is fun and dancing makes you sweat. So sweat through this highly energetic and agreeably offbeat dance workout video mashup!

I have a new found passion for aerobic, dance, and music based group exercise. Alongside the enthusiasm I feel towards these physical activities comes a great degree of energy I wish to connect with and pass along to fellow interested exercisers. The most immediate and direct way for me to do this is through a fast paced mash up video of all the types of moves that energize me. In a medley bridging time periods, intensities, styles, and smiles, I wish to communicate my love for aerobics with the activity seeking viewer, and hopefully participant.

Context

The artists who inspired my video are the instructors and their pupils whose fitness recordings comprise my supercut. Their incredulous broad smiles through the workouts and unexplainably toned bodies invite a participation driven by a knowledge that the exercise is a detour from physical exhaustion and is rather a time for fun. This creates a context of deceit acknowledged and approved by all participating parties, such that the remaining effect of observing (or even following along) the movements on screen remains the only sustainable and meaningful activity. This creates the ideal context for a supercut enticing the viewer to get up and get active.

Process

I knew beforehand what videos I’d like to incorporate based on the choreography of the moves, physical intensity of the moves, associated feelings of personal physical attractiveness, types of exercises, and what I find facetious, not plausible exercise content. For most of these categories I had specific videos I searched for, but for some I found them as I proceeded. For example, I discovered that aerobics videos really resembled the exercise style I sought to highlight and the rhythm closely matched what I was after so an entirely new, and surprisingly plentiful, well of videos opened up for me. Afterwards, the video editing revolved primarily around creating a steadier rhythm across the clips, by adjusting the clip speeds and endpoints. Then I selected a song to play along with the video.

Product

The end product is a just under one minute long video mashup of various exercise videos from YouTube. The supercut tells neither a story nor explains a sequential dance exercise routine. Instead it is a humorous and at times, very tellingly, clumsy combination of my preferences for exercise, music, and visual inspiration. The entirety of the content is at some level meant to be inspirational. If possible, the hops and jumps and leaps seen on screen and and should be followed. There is intended to be no restraint between what my video is initiating and what the viewer interprets this incitement as. Very clear intention can be detrimental to this goal because it might stand in the way between the visual I present, the viewer interpretation that takes place, and then how/she responds to it with his/her subsequent actions.

Critique

I am very satisfied with the theme I focused on with my supercut. It satisfies both my enjoyment of video editing, listening to music, and watching and rewatching motivational exercise videos. The ingredients are well selected and combine to form a matched and unified supercut. However, the editing could be more precise, more agile. At times, the supercut as a whole loses its momentum at the clip ends and even during uncut clips due the clip ordering. The music matches up with the activity on screen at times, but as a whole the two don’t work to the best of potential together.

Personal Reflection

Supercuts need to really be unified around a central idea or vision for the clips to work successfully as a whole. A vision for sequence is also important before beginning to cut and paste sections from selected source videos. This sets a framework of organization and clarity to the project process and end result alike. I would also review what precisely the aim of the video is, and work more deliberately to reach that aim.
