Narrative

The one thing in music that stood out to me as needing a physical embodiment was the drop in a lot of EDM songs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_(music)). One song that came to mind was First Of The Year (Equinox) by Skrillex because it has a pretty strong drop. I wanted to make something that had the drop very literally. So I created a halfpipe-esque object from a bar of soap. Both ends are representative of the normal music and then there is a steep drop (where the music stops) and then it picks up once again. There are five holes added to the middle as there is some sound that "gets through" during the drop in this song (specifically, "Call 9 1 1 Now"). I tried to smooth most of it out because even though the drop is pretty abrupt, the music still seems to flow well. I left the scraps around the object because they're demonstrating how powerful the drop is, as in it was like the soap exploded.

Reflection

I think I would have liked to have more precise tools when working on this next time. This is basically a sculpture and I am not a sculptor. The drop probably should have been deeper and more abrupt. The holes could have been better but the medium (a bar of soap) was pretty fragile. If I had spent more than the allotted time on this, I could have rounded off the drop and the edges better to make it look super clean, which would have been more desired as the drop in the audio is pretty clean. There may have been a better way to capture the Call 9 1 1 Now text as well.
