Outcome

Intention

I wanted to create this project because I needed a modern looking container to hold all writing utensils that is currently scattered across my desk. I designed the container to match the overall aesthetic of my monitor so that it blends in to the background and does not become a distraction when I am doing work.

Context

I wanted something that did not stand out too much from my desk as I did not want the container to be an eyesore or a distraction while I did my work. I had to make sure that the container matched something else on my desk to do this and the most prominent thing on my desk was my monitor. The monitor had an angled rectangular ring for a stand and I wanted to match that aesthetic on my container. To do this, I made the top of my container angled and added triangular holes on the sides.

Process

I started the process of designing this container with sketches. I wanted to match the aesthetic of whatever was already on my desk. Ultimately, I decided that it should match my monitor whose stand is at an angle. After creating the sketches, I chose to make one of them in Fusion360. I first drew a square for the base of the object and extruded it to the appropriate height. Then I created a cut to hollow out the block that I had just created. Finally, I sketched triangles on the side of the hollowed out block and extruded them as a cut to make the angles of the container as well as the triangular holes. I exported this file as a stl and printed it with a 7.5% infill as I wanted it to have some weight to it.

Product

The pencil holder printed relatively nicely. It had a good weight to it so that if one were to put something relatively heavy in it, the holder would not tip. It was also nicely sized to hold a good amount of utensils but not too large to be a hassle.

Reflection

The print for the holder took quite a while due to it's size. An interesting iteration on this project would be to create the pencil holder with thinner walls and less infill but somehow still feel sturdy and nice.
