Outcome

Intention

I bought a succulent from the UC, but I had no where to store it. My friends and I also have a fondness for cats, so I decided to make a cat themed succulent holder. I had other ideas for this, but they were too complicated and could not be finished in the time given.

Context

I wanted to be able to create something that was functional, something that could be used daily. I know there were other similar holders that could hold plants, and decided to investigate if one could be created to hold a succulent. Projects before this included printing a pawn.

Process + Procedure

First I researched what succulent holders looked like. They generally were simple, elegant, and had a single theme. From this I decided to use simple shapes to craft the holder and to use a cat theme for it. I began with a sketch of my idea by looking at various pictures of holders and cats and then formed a basic structure. From there I used the sculpt tools to build out the model itself and then added the eyes and nose through sketches. The biggest issues I had were joining the eyes and nose to the main sculpt body, but I figured out that I could submit them all as components and then use the join function.

Product

I created the cat plant holder using a 3d printer - NVBOT, with the designs made in Autodesk. It was printed in grey plastic and cleaned off with dental tools. It is able to hold a succulent and soil inside the holder and gives off a nice finished look.

Reflection

I learned how to sculpt objects and to add thickness to lines in Autodesk. I also learned how to use the NVbots for 3d printing. If I was to do something differently, I would have started the sculpting earlier to make sure I could have done the more complex design.

Collaboration or Attribution

Walter helped me brainstorm for different ideas when I decided my first design was too complex.
