Outcome

Intention

Write about the big ideas behind your project? What are the goals? Why did you make it? What are your motivations?

I want to create a scarf that lights up and heats up based on your breathing. I am motivated to create this because Pittsburgh has been so cold. I also wanted to give more presence to my breathing because it can be very meditative. If something lights up, I can pay more attention to my breathing. Also, I decided to add a heat pad to also warm up depending on my breathing.

Process and/or Research

Outline your approach to the project? What ideas did you generate and how did you refine or reject them? What did you research and explore? What methods or techniques did you use? What tools and technologies were involved? What challenges were encountered and how did you resolve them?

I looked at different parts that I might need:

  • 1 scarf
  • 1 humidity/temperature sensor to detect my breathing
  • 1 Gemme Microcontroller
  • Conductive thread
  • 3 heat pad
  • 10 neopixels
  • 1 Battery

Details on the wiring will be similar to the electronic components and textiles discussion we had during the first class.

Below is a sketch of what the different parts of the scarf would look like. I learned that you should put the battery on the neck part so my battery will be placed there and the humidity sensor will be placed in the front

Reflection

Reflect on the process of making this project. What did you learn? What would you do differently?

I really love e-textiles. I took it because I had already taken soft fabrication and wanted to continue to learn more soft fabrication skills. I also was an electrical engineering undergrad and this class gave got me excited about it again. I didn't even know the el-wire was so hard to solder or that there was such a thing as shape-memory alloy (e.g. muscle wire). I feel like learning these things has opened up a world of possibility for me.

Side note: I find hot glue gun really hard to work with, so I need to practice that a bit more.
