Outcome

Intention

Write about the big ideas behind your project? What are the goals? Why did you make it? What are your motivations?

The goal of this project was to create a trophy for my team that they would be able to hold onto for years. In planning our competition this month, we have spent a lot of money and decided to opt out of buying ourselves a trophy. I saw this gap and decided to fill it. This trophy "holds" our team's accomplishments since its founding only 4 years ago.

Aesthetic + Inspiration

[What influenced your design? Is there a specific style, art movement, or natural phenomena? Include at least one example. Can be a still image, video, or music.]

Our competition is called Carnegie Cup and so I was inspired to do a regular cup design for a trophy. The competition and trophy also have references to the Stanley Cup as we are hosting at the official Penguins ice rink.

Process + Procedure

[Outline your approach to the project. What steps did you take to design, model, sketch, and prototype this projects? What ideas did you generate and how did you refine or reject them? What challenges were encountered and how did you resolve them? Detail what you created. What methods or techniques did you use? What tools and technologies were involved? Include photos of prototypes, redesigned sketches, design worksheets, and failed trails.]

The design I chose was a plain cup, using multiple lofted circles as I could easily achieve symmetry and a nice shape that can rest on a flat surface. However, I wanted to make it more interesting by adding decorative handles. First, I tried to make skating figures as they have always fascinated me and I find them pretty. However, I realized I can not good at playing around with creating forms and modifying sides and faces.

After realizing that I would not be able to create a nice looking figure, I changed my design thanks to my teacher. I went for blades as it can be drawn on a plane and extruded out easily. I then added text and an extra pattern on the bottom of the cup by placing an image on the surface and splining on top. This was my final design.

Reflection

[Reflect on the process of making this project. What did you learn? What would you do differently?]

I learned a lot about the process of using Fusion 360 and I believe it is very useful when you need exact angles, measurements, and geometries. However, when creating a form other mediums may be easier to handle. I also ran into many problems with the actual 3D printing by a long queue, a failure, and a mess up with printing one of the blades. I am not sure why the support failed on one side but not the other, but would print earlier next time to give time for modifications. I would also remember my dimension requirements. After scaling down, the text became very small and is now unreadable since I cannot get all of the support off.
