Outcome

Intention

The original intention behind this project was to create a make-up brush holder that "I" would love to use. When brainstorming for the project, make-up came up to my mind first because it is a crucial part of my daily routine. I had always wondered why make-up brush holders cannot be fun and useful at the same time. Thus, I have decided to make the perfect make-up brush holder that I would love to use.

Research & Context

In research of the existing make-up brush holders available online, I have noticed that most products are simply rectangular or cylindrical without any details. I wanted to create a holder that is easy for users to locate each brush easily and also to hold hair-ties and bobby pins, which are the items that every girl manages to lose on a daily basis.

Process & Procedure

Pictured above is my initial sketch for my make-up brush holder. So the design i came up with is a holder that resembles magnolia petals. As you can see, it’s a basic cylinder on the bottom, but the top part branches out to different directions, that different brushes will sit on the bottom but branch out to different spaces. Therefore, users can categorize and classify brushes to their needs.

However, developing the design on Fusion 360 was more difficult than I have expected.  Creating the delicate petals required more skills than I had, so I decided to change the entire design half way. Thus, I came up with a different design. Instead of having petals on top, I created a cylindrical holder with "Ji's Beauty Holder" extruded in the front.

Product

My final product reflects my design, except for the extruded text in front. Due to limitations of 3D printer, the text could not be printed without the supporting stack on the bottom. However, the unexpected addition to the design actually helped in fulfilling my intention of hanging hair ties and bobby pins, since it had more support.

Reflection

It was my very first time working with a 3D printer, and I have learned a lot from the process. If I had more experience and better understanding of the machine and software, I would have changed some details and avoid unexpected additional details in the final product. However, I am satisfied overall, considering that it was my first product. For my next project, I wish to create a higher quality design.
