Write about the big ideas behind your project? What are the goals? Why did you make it? What are your motivations?
My goal was to make a clock that I would want to look at so it had to be aesthetically pleasing yet fun. I wanted to combine different materials and stack them as different layers.
[How does your outcome relate to other work in the field? What makes it similar or different to other objects of the same genre? How have other objects failed to solve the problem you have identified?]
I can't say I found any particular inspiration for this project, but I knew I wanted to take a creative approach to this project especially since I would be looking at this clock quite regularly. I imagined I would put this clock on my studio desk so I would be looking at it quite a bit.

I used a variety of different materials in my clock in including white and black acrylic and wood, all approximately 3 millimeters in thickness.

When I heard this project prompt I really wanted to use my dog's face as the main component of the clock. Since my dog is at home and I only get to see her whenever I go home, so I miss her a lot. I thought it would be really cute to use her face as the platform for the clock. I specifically used an image that I took of my dog using a fish eye lens so her nose would be in the center.

I first sketched out the image of my dog in my sketchbook and how I would want the clock to look like. My plan was originally to make all of the details and outlines on out of one material, however I decided to use multiple materials and then stack up the layers of acrylic and wood. To incorporate more layers and materials, I thought about the dimensionality of my dog's face and which features I would want to extend out from the bottom layers. Because my dog is has white, brown , and black fur, I thought using white and black acrylic and wood would be appropriate. Certain features such as the eyebrows and eyes I decided to engrave into. I realized, however, by stacking up the layers of acrylic, the clock kit did not fit appropriately. To resolve this issue, I had to layer some of the pieces, such as the nose, over the hour hand for everything to stack together perfectly. The minute hand and the second hand then perfectly fit over all the other layers.
[Reflect on the process of making this project. What did you learn? What would you do differently?]
I learned to appropriate use Fusion in order to 3D model what a physical product will look like. Although this project is essentially flat, because it has some dimension, I was able to more clearly picture the final product.
If I could do anything differently, it would probably be to resolve the layering issue. I think it would be much better if the hour hand were over all the other layers of material so that it would not rotate awkwardly behind the nose.
