Outcome

For my project I decided to emulate Berenice Abbott. While she has a wide range of photographic subjects, I decided to focus mainly on her photos of city architecture.

In many of her photos she works to contrast buildings against each other, illuminating the lighter buildings in a seemingly brighter light. She also uses darker and out-of-focus foregrounds to further enhance the effect.

My Photos:

I tried to work with high contrast images, both from building to building and using dark objects in the foreground to make the objects in the back seem brighter.

There were quite a few difficulties that I encountered while trying to imitate Abbott. First, weather conditions were slightly unfavorable in most cases. By the time I got out of class and went into downtown or Oakland, the sun was already setting and it was hard to get the correct lighting for many of the pictures, as she uses shadows very efficiently.

Sorry some of the photos are appearing sideways - if you open them in a new tab they should be upright. If you don't want to do that I labeled which side is up for each of the sideways photos.
