Alien: I started with the Big Sweep preset in the ES P synthesizer which is a nice pad sound with a very serene aura. I reduced it's attack by a significant amount and increased it's overdrive. That way, it has a dubstep-like pitch bend at each note and has more grunge to the sound.

Smooth: I started with the Cosmic String Bright preset in the ES2 synthesizer. The sound was originally very bright and slightly harsh so I reduced it's distortion setting to 0 and decreased the cutoff and resonance as well to get a duller, filtered sound. Additionally, I added a phaser effect to make the smoothness of the sound more apparent.
