I love posters! They're great because you can have them of anything--sports, music, art, sayings, mottos, etc. So, here I have a collection of my friend's art of a show that we both watch, official art from that same show, mottos that Facebook uses, cover art for an album that I bought, the USA women's lacrosse team, Odesza's logo, and a little card (apple tree) that my classmates made for me when I did a tiny study abroad. Also, little figures that represent other things I adore. I have to pass by my desk on my way out of my apartment, so why not make it nice to look at?

I come from California, so Giant Eagle is basically like Safeway. You have to have their advantage card or whatever to actually get the sales. And so these over-the-top sales advertisements are an extremely effective way of getting customers to get their advantage card (I have one now). It's free and basically ESSENTIAL for you not to get ripped off while shopping for food to survive. ARGH. But...incidentally, my roommate and I won't be in town next weekend, so we had to stock up. I did buy 5 blocks of cheese because of the sale... They saw right through me.

On the way back from Giant Eagle, I saw a lot of ads that I had to do a double take because I walked past it and remembered this assignment. I definitely missed a bunch, since logos are also media. However, these are the ones that I noticed after getting in the mindset of "I'm going to take pictures of advertisements and other media!" The paper ads were at the bus stop we were waiting at. After seeing all of the other laminated and propped up ads, I really noticed the blandness of the plain paper. I was also really hungry, so the desserts just made it worse. I liked the message that the church was trying to send (though I'm not religious). And that yoga class looks too intense.

And then I was discussing homework with friends later that day, and we took a tiny study break. Eurovision is amazing.

Summary

I realize that I typically tune out ads (also that I don’t typically go outside unless I absolutely have to). I’m the type of shopper who only goes out to buy what they need. Most of the physical ads I usually pay attention to are sales that I am deliberately looking for, so Giant Eagle sales while I’m at Giant Eagle are an example. Otherwise, I'll go online and find shops with sales before heading out to buy anything. I go out with a plan, so on buses, I usually put my earbuds in and listen to Spotify. Actually, I’ve subconsciously memorized some of the Spotify ads—they’ve become such a norm now that I just ignore them. I have AdBlock just so that I am able to browse only the things I want to browse on YouTube and other sites. So, most ads find their way to me on websites and apps that I use on my phone or out in public. But most of the media that I consume is on the Internet via my phone or laptop. However, I used this assignment to showcase the types of media I typically don't notice I'm consuming or media I'm not actively seeking out to consume.
