Outcome

We see media during the day, but either we’re so used to some of them that we don’t notice them consciously anymore, or we don’t notice them because they are hidden, aiming to leave their mark on our subconscious.

The first thing I noticed after getting this assignment was how many notifications I got from the games on my tablet in a day. Sometimes they are important notifications that I look at, for example, “Sale on the game! 50% off!”, which I pay attention to, but sometimes, there are notifications like “The game misses you. Come back.” Which I do not read twice. However, I’ve realized that those notifications actually remind me that I have that game and it doesn’t allow me to lose my contact with it.

After seeing that, I started to look around for more signs about what I was letting go unnoticed. I found it in my own living room when I went to sit on the couch and do some homework. I live with two of my friends and we got lots of posters and put them up. Not only the posters themselves are media themselves, so for example our Legend of Zelda poster is encouraging us to play Legend of Zelda games, also I have realized that sometimes the company puts their logos somewhere that can be seen and I think this is aiming at our subconscious. I see this MARVEL logo nearly every day without even realizing it.

After doing homework for a couple of hours, I decided to take a break and play some games. There is this game called Cytus, made by Rayark Inc. Before Cytus, Rayark games already had a game out called Mandora. Then, as I was choosing a song from Cytus to play with, I realized that in some of the songs, the logo of Mandora either in the picture or in the background even though it actually has no relationship to this game except that it’s made by the same company. So while looking at an unrelated game, I would get images from a completely different game. (The first picture is the picture of the opening theme of Mandora. The second picture is unrelated to Mandora, but on the right down side, I have put a red square around a Mandora.)

Summary:

What’s amazing is that I’ve been very sick this weekend, so I couldn’t go out. However, even when I was just home, even when the television was also never turned on and I wasn’t surfing the internet or going to sites I didn’t know before, I was able to find all of these media sending messages in my own home. It’s amazing that even when I was just home and doing the things I always do, there was so much media around me. It seems to me that there are three kinds of media we see in daily life. There are ones that we know about them consciously, when we look at Facebook, or Twitter and etc. There is media that we’re so used to, we don’t notice it anymore like the notifications. And there is media that is hidden, like in the posters or in the background picture of an unrelated game.

Media is such a part of our lives now that it is difficult to even notice it around us sometimes. We wake up and look at our phone to check what time it is, seeing notifications from social media and games and other things. Media is with us from when we wake up until we go to sleep.
