Dataset

I used datasets made available by the Western Pennsylvania Regional Data Center (WPRDC) for the Healthy Ride Trip Data. Available at https://data.wprdc.org/dataset/healthyride-trip-data. My dataset ranges from 07/01/2015 to 09/30/2015 and includes 38,109 trips taken from 492 bikes from 51 stations in the Pittsburgh region. On average a trip lasted 59 minutes with a maximum length of 1.99 days and the shortest ride lasting just 50 seconds.

Initial Analysis

There are 50 bike stations in Pittsburgh with an average of 18.12 racks (min = 12, max = 35). The S Euclid Ave & Centre Ave, Centre Ave & Kirkpatrick St and Federal St & E North Ave are the least resourced stations and with 2 stations having the most racks (Centre Ave and Consol, North Shore Trail & Ft Duquesne Bridge). The next large resourced racks (with 21 racks) are Liberty Ave & Baum Blvd, 37th St & Butler St, Bigelow Blvd & Fifth Ave, and Ross St & Sixth Ave.

Exploration

The most popular station which the most trips are from are Healthy Ride Club and it is also the most popular station which the most trips are to. And the popularity does not correspond to the resources of the racks.

There is a rhythm of the total count of trips with an increase during the weekend and a decrease towards Wednesday.  And overall the number of trips are decreasing with time with a sharp drop after 09/21/2015.

Future Work

I further investigated the trip duration in terms of days, weeks, and days of the week. I would integrate the weather data and events calendar. I think it will be interesting to see the relationship between the number of trips and events. Also, there might be a correlation between the weather and the duration of trips.
