I’m from Turkey, so I use Whatsapp a lot, which is a mobile phone app used very commonly by people especially in Europe. I collected people’s profile photos from Whatsapp for this assignment:

When collecting all these photos something that I’ve noticed was that some people have selfies or a picture of themselves; or they were with other people. It is interesting that people would choose to have pictures of others with them in the picture when the actual reason why we have profile pictures is because we want to check if it is the correct person when adding and texting the people. Having many people in the profile picture defeats this purpose. So I decided to compare how many people had pictures of just their own and how many of them were with other people. The total number of people is 62.

The ratio between photos of peoples by themselves and photos of people with other people is about 1:1. Suprisingly, the ratio doesn’t change no matter if looked at female, male, and it doesn’t even change with age. In all categories, the percentage of people who have only themselves in the profile photo and who have other people with them is always about 50%. The total number of people we have data on is not very large, so it is difficult to get a very reliable data, but the most difference in numbers between photos of people by themselves and photos with other people is 5 in all categories, which means that there isn’t much difference. This is very interesting since profile pictures are for knowing who the user is texting.
