Intention

The goal of this project was to design a 3-D printed candle holder using Autodesk Fusion 360 that fits the specifications of a 2.5" x 4" candle.

Context

This design was inspired by candle collection and my actual need for a candle holder. I consistently order a specific candle from Amazon that does not have a case, and since my room is a cluttered dorm room the need to have a protective barrier for an open flame is essential.

Process + Procedure

I drew design inspiration from other candle holders I had seen online with decorative holes that the flame shines through. The difficulty in the design of this holder was maintaining an interesting visual design with decorative holes while also crafting a design that could print cleanly and nicely with minimal external supports.

Product

The design was ultimately created in Autodesk Fusion 360 using 3-Dimensional modeling software. The finished product is 3.5" x 5", and took around 19 hours to print.

Reflection

The creation of this project was very useful for experimenting with 3-D modeling techniques, which I had never used before. The final print was a pretty rough rendering of the original design, and it was necessary to sand down and refine the cast for a while to produce something that looks finished and polished.

It is also ultimately not functional, due to the fact that PLA is toxic when burned, however I learned a lot and got to do my first 3-D print! So not not all efforts were in vain.
