Cassandra Chen - Exploring Crocheting

Intention

I've always really admired crocheted stuffed animals, since the texture and craftsmanship that goes into it makes it a lot more fun than normal ones. Additionally, I've spent a little bit of time learning knitting, but never how to crochet. Therefore, I wanted to learn to make adorable critters of my own. 

Process

I have a friend who crochets, so she helped me go to the store, pick out a crochet animals book, and purchase yarn. Although she recommended I start with something easier, like a scarf, she helped me to pick out a pattern in the book (snail). She taught me how to do basic crochet stitches in order to complete the project. Based on the snail pattern, I picked out 4 weight off white yarn and a colorful pink/blue/purple striped yarn to use. I also purchased polyfill stuffing to stuff the snail. 

Product

  The pattern required using the following crochet stitches and techniques: slip knot, single crochet stitch, double crochet stitch, invisible decrease, and working in back loops. I used a 4mm crochet hook, a yarn needle, and crochet markers, along with the purchased yarn and stuffing. 

I made the body of the snail with the off-white yarn, and the shell with the colorful pink/blue yarn. The antennas were made by stringing the yarn through the head. Additionally, I used back stitch to sew on the mouth and a running stitch to connect the shell and body. I'm really happy with how the colors compliment each other. 

Reflection

From this project, I learned the basics of making stuffed crocheted animals. It came out really cute, which motivates me to want to make more, especially as presents. I also found it to be a really fun and relaxing activity. I want to try and make the other creatures in the pattern book I purchased. In the future, I also need to put more stuffing in initially, since adding stuffing after it is finished is very hard.
