Final Project: Dungeons and Dragons Felted Beholder

Made by Nathan Naylor · UNLISTED (SHOWN IN POOLS)

My project proposal is to create a to scale felted version of a Beholder as seen in Dungeons and Dragons. Ideally, this felted figurine could be used in a tabletop setting to represent the aberration.

Process

I started with a simple sketch and a breakdown of the base components.

I used white, green, red, blue, and black wool in order to craft the Beholder. I decided to go with a red/green main eye, 2 red eyes, 2 green eyes, and one blue eye.

I decided that needle felting would be the easiest way to achieve the complexities of texture and detail needed to craft this.

Product

Via needle felting, I was able to create the individual components and then put them each together. I utilized varying colors of wool in order to give color to the creature.

Reflection

Through this project I learned that hand felting is a tedious but fun endeavor. If I could change anything I would felt the material more densely in order to avoid loose strands of cotton.
