I think your idea is very creative, and I like that you have a clear message that you want to communicate. I also really like the way you will be using someone else's artwork, and adding small details to symbolize very different ideas than what might be interpreted from the original work. It is clear that you will be using the painting in your project, and will also be taking the logos of various schools. Are these the only things you will take? And is this the only painting you will modify? How would you approach selling your recreation, and to whom?
In the image you linked, the iconic yellow school bus (for the most part) is a symbol of equal opportunity. In towns, it stops by everybody's house, halts traffic equally stubbornly for each child to safely be able to board, and the same greeting from the bus driver. At the same time, once aboard, the same yellow school bus is a symbol of division, of exclusive groups who claim hierarchically ranked seats of the bus based on their social rankings. It introduces the two sided issue of apparent equality accompanied by long-standing inequality. I think it's a great starting point for your project. This awareness campaign can go in a number of directions.
