Ignite

Intention

For my project I picked "Ignite" by Zedd. "Ignite" is the theme song of 2016 League of Legends world championship. As a zealous player of League of Legends and a viewer of professional league of Legends matches, I feel connected with the enthusiasm and intensity the song conveyed. Instead of staying in front of the laptop, I went to watch the matches in person. I can still remember the cheers and tears I experienced, and therefore I wanna recreate what I "saw" in this song and my memory of my experience of watching S6 world championship in person.

Product

My work showed the effect of flame and ignite. I used polymer clay in multiple colors as the material to construct my work. I selected clay with colors of red and yellow, which are also the main color in the music video of ignite, to create a strong visual stimulation. I modeled and cut the red clay to form the base of flame, and then decorated the yellow clay on the base to form the final effect of combustion.

Approach

I find the inspiration of using polymer clay from the polymer clay artworks posted on reddit. A redditor named Qoth uploaded an album of clay polymer artworks affixed to the outsides of Altoid tins. The post quickly went viral, with the accompanying Imgur Album already viewed 177,000 times in the first 10-hours. At first I also want to create my work on a plane and fix it in a certain area. Later I felt it hard to show the layers and the spread of the flame if I constrain it on a plane. Then I decide to present my work in an open space.

Reflection

From my perspective, what I presented in my work is exactly what I saw when listening to "Ignite". I think my work fits both the name and the rhythm of "Ignite." However there are many things I can improve or change on this work. Firstly, modeling using hand made the texture of the pieces really rough, which to some extent gives a sense of not well worked on details. I will try using cutting and modeling tools next time. Also the direct contact with the material left my hand colored by the material, which was hard to clean up afterwards.

I like your final piece especially since it looks like you put a lot of work into it to present an igniting fire, and it well represents the original song. But reading your documentation made me realize that your work doesn't have much connection to the song except for the title of the song. I think you could maybe help the audience draw the connection by analyzing more elements of the song. But overall I think your clay work is very cute
