Product

I created an abridged retelling of the Marvel Thor film from the perspective of Loki. In it, Loki is raised by Odin until one day he discovers that he is a frost giant. Odin's age is starting to take its toll, and his other son Thor is irresponsible, harassing the neighboring frost giants. When Odin denies him, Thor goes on a tantrum a destroys the Bifrost Bridge, with Loki trying to stop him. Odin strips Thor of his power in retaliation, and Loki reluctantly takes the throne.

The product was created using clips from youtube, and audio from Everybody Wants to Rule the World sung by Lorde, and put together using Adobe Premiere Pro.

Intention

The assignment was to take an existing story and reinterpret it. With the massive wave of superhero movies coming in the last decade (and next decade if Marvel has anything to say about it) I was inspired to work with one of their products. Loki is one character in particular who is beloved by the fanbase and whose actions tend to be...pardoned frequently by them. I wanted to try to visually present a story that made Loki out to be the hero, or at least the protagonist, while Thor off to be the reckless rival character. Because this is the God of Lies we're taking about though, I thought it appropriate to Everybody Wants to Rule the World as background music. The contrast the visuals and audio is meant to give the impression that maybe what the audience sees shouldn't necessarily be trusted.

Context

Recently I saw a post, saying how if you watch the Superman movie backwards, it tells a different story.

That got me thinking about how the order of events in a story can affect the interpretation of characters. It being Superman inspired me into looking into other heroes. I didn't end up playing the Thor backwards, but did came up the order of events to manipulate the perception of characters and what is actually happening to them.

Process

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to include Everybody Wants to Rule the World from Lorde, so uploaded that into Premiere Pro. From that point, I download Thor clips from Youtube and began editing them into the visuals. The hardest part was getting the clips to match to the music and well as visually flow as some sort of story.

When I finished making the video, I exported it QuickTime Player. However, I kept having trouble uploading the video to the IDeATe gallery. In the end, I uploaded the video to youtube and used the embed code to bring it into the project.

Reflection

I think that I was able to get the the basic of the project down; I took portions of a story and used a (somewhat) different form of media to reinterpret it and give it a different perspective. That said, I do think I could have done better on some of the technical aspects. I understand what's going on, having made the product, but I don't know how coherent the video is to someone who can't read my explanation or who has never seen the movie before. If I could, I would have added more clips to try to tell a visually more coherent story.

I learned a lot about visual and audio editing in Premiere Pro from this project, especially how to trim and match up the two. Exporting videos was something else I gained experience with, especially on how large the different formats are and what needs to be done to upload a generated video online.
