Marker Holder

THE PROBLEM

I use my desk at home as a workspace for studio work as well as my computer work. I currently don't have any holders to organize my pens or markers, so the desk gets very messy at times. I get stressed out when I have to get work done and my desk is unorganized especially since my desktop computer is on it as well. There is also a hole that used to have a plastic cover on the corner of my desk.

SKETCHES

The first step in making this project is to sketch out what I would like to design. I need a holder that fits all my markers and the stapler that hangs around my desk. I also need a plug that covers the hole on my desk. I had to take measurements of these factors and then sketch out an idea of the holder on paper.

MODEL ON FUSION 360

Once I have my design down in a sketch, I moved onto the computer to model the holder in 3D. I used the software fusion 360 to do this. I used to the sketch command and the extrude command to get the basic geometries of the holder. Then I used the shell command to turn the blocks into holder objects. 

FABRICATION PROCESS

For the base of the holder, I used the laser cutter to cut out the shapes since they are planar. I etched on some words to describe what each slot is for. Acrylic glue is then used to glue the base together. I used the NV bot to 3D print the holder objects. The shapes fit into the laser cut base and joints together into 1 but can also be taken apart if needed to. There is the possibility of printing other customized holders in the future and also fit it into the base.

FINAL PRODUCT

The final product came out pretty good. All of the pieces fit together and it fits on the desk very well. Some weaknesses would be that the circular plug that goes into the hole on the table does not have any teeth to latch onto the desk with so the holder can freely spin around. I would print 1 with teeth so it stays in place. The holder is good in that it fits everything perfectly and the pieces come apart so other changes can be made easily.
