Mountain

Intention

I made a digital homage to Agnes Martin's work Moutain.

Work

I chose Mountain because I initially had a very strong negative reaction to it. I wondered how it could be considered art. I challenged myself to make something like Mountain to see if it really was so easy to make something like this.

Approach

I took advantage of the copy-paste and selection tools to get uniform lines and reflect the "mountain" into a "lake". I also inverted the colors to make the piece feel more modern.

Product

I used Paint Tool Sai and a Wacom tablet to create this piece.

Reflection

I think I captured the minimalist feel of Martin's works while putting my own spin on it. If I were to redo I might do an animation or code some sort of game.

Your reproduction of the work is austere and striking. I especially like the texture you added at the bottom. One thing you could have done to exaggerate a sense of scale or depth would be to make the lines at the top of the composition thinner, to make them appear as though they’re receding into the distance. But it’s a nice composition. The documentation leaves a lot to be desired. There’s no research on the artist or the work, no context provided, and very little explanation of the aesthetic choices you made.

About

This is a remake of Agnes Martin's Mountain. I varied the space between the lines to enhance the feeling of perspective and I switched the white and black to put a more modern spin on it. I wanted it to look like a mountain reflected in a lake.
