Warehaus

The creative, the wanderer, the explorer - we all have some attraction to abandoned spaces. Be it silence, emptiness, discomfort, knowledge, or connection with a deeper feeling - when the door to an abandoned building is opened, a quest for something begins.  

Warehaus is an installation that aims to connect with the seeker of abandoned things. Created for the person who is looking, but who doesn’t know what they’re looking for, Warehaus creates a space which is open to interpretation, and which will move and connect with the occupant to provide exactly what they don’t know they need.  

Composed of a projection and an immersive soundscape, Warehouse uses sound sensors to determine whether the occupant is restless or still, and creates an ambient atmosphere which mimics their level of activity; the image projected moves and changes color as the sound being broadcast crescendos. The result is a space which is both reactive and familiar, relaxing the one experiencing it and creating a personalized meditative space.

Our prototype is an abstract installation designed to mimic the feel of an indoor abandoned space.  Taking color from traditional spray-painted art, we created a script in TouchDesigner which projects an amorphous, constantly moving image onto select portions of a grey concrete interior space, similar to an empty warehouse.  

Concrete Jungle was inspired partly by Play the Building by sound artist David Byrne.  In addition, we took inspiration from our teams initial concept, a digital spray-painting system which would project color similar in looks to spray paint on the walls of the same abandoned space.
