Too Popular #mashup

Outcome

This will be a mashup of the iconic gestures of popular youtubers or celebrities. The rhythm of music will vary according to the progression of video clips and the pace is relatively fast to emphasize the "overindulgent" theme of this project.

Intention

As many things going viral on the internet, people are becoming increasingly more overwhelmed by the abundance of "interesting" things-when the quantity of such content goes up, the level of excitement those widely spread media give to people seem to remain stable. Consequently, the diminishing return effect will potentially make the audience experience aesthetic fatigue, the inability to generate positive response to those viral media. This mashup, aggravating the extent of overabundance of popular content, intends to demonstrate this trend and give the audience an immediate feeling of how mass information will produce negative impact.

Context

I personally watch youtube a lot and I'm familiar with youtubers from all over the world. One thing they have in common is that they all have a representative, iconic gesture in most of their videos. Beside that, their styles can also be spotted by analyzing their habitual movements in the videos. Those are the elements that remind people who they are, and how they become viral and popular.

Process

I will first gather some viral content from the youtube channels that I watch and then find correlation between them. Then I will choose suitable music clips and try to combine them with the video clips so that the progression of music can accurately represent the theme of flow of movements.

Product

I'm influenced by the rapid cut technique in the film Requiem for a Dream. This is a technique to illustrate a process in a much shorter period of time by only showing several cuts of a process with very fast pace. I will apply this technique to express the flow of popular contents and to show how overwhelming they are with the compressed, fast-paced mashup of those clips.

Critique

This work might be monotonous if it's filled with one style and repetitively apply it to all the clips gathered for the project. But since this project mainly expresses the overwhelming feature of popular media, this style matches my intention pretty well.
