Trance Clock

Made by Alan Hodge

My goal is to take the influence of Trance in my life and create a time piece, a clock. I would like to utilize different aspects of the laser cutters available. This would include etching, cutting, and layering. Also, the use of an inlay would be very exciting.

Intention

Write about the big ideas behind your project? What are the goals? Why did you make it? What are your motivations?

I love trance. The edm trance community has been an amazing outlet and resource in my life and I wish to create a clock to represent that love.

Context

In class we learned about inlaying and stacking layers of media on top of each other. I want to utilize the ABGT logo and inlay acrylic in acrylic. I wish to also etch the surface of one of them to make it really pop. I want to create something that is personal to me while utilizing the different techniques we learned in class.

Process

Outline your approach to the project? What ideas did you generate and how did you refine or reject them? What did you research and explore? what were the design choices? What challenges were encountered and how did you resolve them?

First I had to brainstorm ideas and just let them sit with me. It took me a couple of weeks to decide that I wanted to do something related to trance. I knew right off the bat that I wanted to do something related to music though. Next, I sketched what I thought would be a great clock, it is documented above.

Product

Detail what you created. I wanted to utilize different colors and inlay the background and actual design two make a beautiful contrast. I may have steered away from the scope of the project by making two finished products.

*** There were no clock kits left at the lending library but the hole is the correct size for the clock kit screw. Also, I personally like the design with no text on it far more but I also wanted to incorporate engraving and make sure to have it be a "true" clock.***

Reflection

Reflect on the process of making this project. What did you learn? What would you do differently? I learned that the amount of time to finalize a project into a product.... is SO TIME CONSUMING. It was indeed a large project, but well worth the reward. I may even make these as gifts to my friends who also love A&B.

This design is originally from Above and Beyond. I had some help from the ideate open access hours. Thank you L.Larson for all the help on this project.
