AR Fit Lens

Made by xinm and Roisin Pearson

AR Fit Lens is a conceptual design based on Magic Leap's future AR technology. When the users put those lenses on, their physical measurements such as heartbeat, weight, work-out duration, etc. are sensed and recorded. As a result, users can check their performances and their lenses can notify users visually. Moreover, the Fit lenses are connected to other lenses such that they can motivate the users by comparing the performances of them with those of their friends and families.

Intention

The project is intended to help people, across all ages, to keep track of their physical performances and even health conditions without them manipulating their phones and computers. The users should be able to receive different kinds of notifications when they use AR contact lenses.

Context

AR Fit Lens is inspired by Magic Leap’s AR technology, which is not published yet.

Process

We decided to work on an IoT device that maintain or even booster users' exercise time amount. After Learning about Magic Leap, our team decided to design our product based on this future technology. We watched many conceptual design videos, IoT commercials to determine what would make this product good and bad at the same time.

Product

When users put those Fit lenses on, their physical measurements such as heartbeat, weight, work-out duration, etc. will be sensed and recorded either directly by Fit lenses or through an IoT network including the lenses, smart phone, fitbit bracelet, computer and so on.

The AR Fit Lens is also able to connect with other lenses such that it compares the physical performances of the users with those of their friends and families. The users not only can check their physical performance at any time, but also can see their friends’ and families’ physical performances. Besides the users checking their performances, the Fit Lens also preemptively gives visual reminders, warnings and rewards. Therefore, the users might be overly “competitive” in a way that can be detrimental to their physical and mental health.

Reflection

In general, our team had good communication and cooperation. During the week of brainstorming, planning and filming, we think that the hardest parts are deciding what to film and finding effective editing-strategies to convey our ideas. Since we did not have much video filming and editing experience, It was also hard to make the video clip both emotional, relatable and commercial like.

DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS

- If a IoT device is highly interactive, such as our AR Fit Lens, the designers should limit the interactivity to a certain extent.

- For IoT devices that share information, the developers should be very careful about features regarding privacy.

- AR Fir Lens is a good example of how IoT device can fade into the background. Designers should design more of those.
