Remixing Adele's "Hello" with a variety of other sources and effects

Layer #1

Chelsea

I decided to use the song Hello by Adele for this project because it's popular enough that everyone knows it, and the lyrics and audio are widely remixed into all sorts of memes. I took the first 30 seconds of the song, sped it up, and made the pitch higher. Then after the line "hello, can you hear me", I added the "uh huh uh huh ..."part of The Romans' song, Uh Huh, because it's interesting that the lyrics of one song transitions into that of the other. All of the manipulations are done in audacity.

I replaced all occurrences of the word "Hello" with a clip of the word "Goodbye" from the Beatles song "Hello, Goodbye". At the end I added a longer section from the song saying "I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello". This subverts the original song's meaning, so it is now a conversation between one person saying goodbye and another person saying hello. I also added a fade out effect at the end.

I used Audacity to add some dubstep-type sounds to the track. I took these sounds from the song "Forbes" by Borgore featuring G-Eazy. It was intended to be a filler for the silences between verses of the two songs.

I used Launchpad to create a beat pattern for the project, so that the audio has an underlying unifying tempo despite the remix of different elements from different songs. The breaks I created added a chilling effect to the project, which I think is nice because it gave our audio a nonchalant feel, neutralizing the vehement "Hello" and the blueish "Hello, Goodbye".

I used the Paulstretch effect in Audacity to extend the beginning part of the song by 3 times. I also added a fade in effect at the beginning. I did not change the end of the song, so that the distinction between the conversation's two participants would be clearer.

I used audacity to speed up the beginning of the song a bit to make the piece more coherent, since there was one sudden change in tempo between two parts. I also added another portion of a techno sound (from "Forbes") to the end of the song, fading it out to finish the piece. I did not do too much to the entirety of the piece because I was the last one to alter it, so I thought more of connecting the piece and somewhat "polishing" it as a final result.

Approach/Process

We did not have a clear idea of what the end product would sound like, and mostly based each stage on the previous one. We used Audacity to edit the sound files and apply various effects. The modifications we made were inspired heavily by the original song, such as the beats and replaced lyrics matching up.

Reflection

The process of this project was very interesting, given each person added a new style and flavor to the audio. The outcome of the entire process was a piece completely different from the starting point. We also used a variety of techniques in each layer, which allows for a lot of different textures and sounds.
