Objects for Displaced Beings

Made by Jen Liu

Objects for Displaced Beings is a series of speculative items designed for those who find themselves removed from their location. These low tech and portable tools aim to provide adaptions for whatever occasions may arise for these beings.

Intention

Objects for Displaced Beings are a series of items designed to aid beings that find themselves removed from their locations.  Some of these situations include migration as a result of climate change, war or gentrification.  These items are meant to be low-tech, portable to provide adaptations to unexpected conditions.

Training Sessions

Training sessions are held to teach participants how to build, implement and modify Objects. Modification includes using different materials or tools specific to a location.  Participants will be given resources to facilitate their own training workshops.

Upon completion of the training, participants will receive a badge that can be attached to garments.  The badge serves the purpose of identifying those who have received training.  The badge is embroidered out of conductive and nonconductive threads and embedded with electronics so it can used as a compass.

Continuity-on-the-Go

How can we create things on the go? How can we start to build a portable physical computing studio? Continuity-on-the-go is a wearable multimeter powered by microbial fuel cells.  This device will allow the wearer to test materials they find around them to see if they will be useable for different electronic projects.

What are Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs)?

MFCs convert organic matter to electricity using different types of bacteria, such as those found in muck by a river.  When placed in an anaerobic setting with electrodes, the bacteria transfer electrons produced from consumption to an anode or cathode.

Plant Sling

The Plant Sling is a wearable hydroponics system.  Pockets are embedded with a nutrient solution that allows plants to grow without soil. The interior of the sling contains a watering system for the plants. The design of the sling allows it to be worn across the body in the front, back, side or around the hip.

Reflection

This project was a culmination of different ideas I've had throughout this semester while learning about new ways of working with media and technology.  I am also interested in integrating speculative design into my own practice as an artist/educator.   This series comes through my own lack of faith in our current systems of living and needing to create objects for survival when society collapses.
