In this project, we explored some of the many uses for palm hand chisels.

We do not claim to be exerts after our short time using these wood carving tools, but we have gained an understanding of some of the uses, constraints, and techniques relating to a set of palm hand chisels.

Our palm hand chisels came as a set of 5. Each piece of the set had a different cutting edge shape and thus a different set of abilities. For example, the right angle chisel is able to cut small inside corners, and the flat edge chisel is able to smooth almost any surface and reach in to small areas.

Unlike other kinds of chisels, the palm hand chisel is best for small detail work, not removing large volumes of wood.

To showcase the wide range of powers that palm hand chisels have, we created a small wooded boat. This shape contains smooth faces, patterned compound curves and right angle inside cuts. All of these effects would be impossible to create with any other tool.
