PROJECTone - TIME

Made by P. Zach Ali

Using a Clock Kit, and Acrylic Sheet- utilize Laser Cutting, Engraving and Scoring Techniques to create a functional Clock. This Project should illustrate the User's ability to properly prepare a CAD File within Rhinoceros 3D for Laser Processing.

My clock echoes a gear with a spoked interior. The outline was cut from clear acryllic with engraved numbers. I painted the back surface black, and rubbed the numbers with white paint to highlight them.

With the goal of keeping the clock relatively simplistic, I cut four Roman Numerals to designate 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. I also included one of my favorite quotes related to time.

My clock is inspired by my jewish star necklace that I always wear. The hebrew in the shape of a jewish star forms the clock face.

I was intrigued by the different patterns one can make from simply rotating a single shape at various degrees. After playing around a bit, I chose this pattern that I made with an ellipse.

I had to make a Totoro clock because it is one of my favorite characters of all time.

This clock has a fun swirl design with some alterations to the numbers to create a more fantastical feeling.

My clock was made as a gift for my grandparents, engraved with their two dogs and cut to represent picture frames on a table for their nine grandchildren.

I made an egg clock for a kitchen environment! There aren't any numbers because I wanted mine to be abstract and unconventional.

Is it a clock? Or is it just time represented in space.... I think clocks are funny because they're really an extremely interesting and complex idea, but they're so easy to use. The location of the hands on the clock's face convey complex and specific information extremely easily. So I designed a clock that is super meta, and just kind of says what it is.

Also, you'll probably notice no laser engraving is visible on this clock. While that is true, I certainly explored and experimented greatly with the laser cutter-- In another class of mine I used my DigiTool knowledge of laser cutting to make a cardstock lamp (can be seen here,  http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~ttabb/wp/wordpress/index.php/2016/02/24/paper-lamp/ , if ya care) and experimented with cutting, engraving, and scoring different materials through the time of the mini.

for best results, do not remove from 3D space...

note that here the "e" in represent is missing the feature that would make it an e-- the bar was reattached with super glue shortly after this photo

A sundial is one of the earliest time-telling mechanisms. As the sun moves across the sky, its casted shadow aligns with different hour markings to indicate the time of the day. This project is my interpretation of a sundial, merging ancient technology with modern electronics. This version also marks half-hours as well.

One of my favorite stories is Le Petit Prince, so I laser cut a clock of the prince on his planet. He is 12 o'clock, the stars represent 3, 6, and 9, and the little ovals are the rest of the numbers. In the center is one of my favorite quotes "Toutes les grandes personnes ont d'abord été des enfants" meaning "All adults were first children."

Marie Shaw:

My clock was inspired by my watch that my dad gave me a while ago. The gear-like line mirrors the outside of my watch face, and the pattern going down the center is similar to the band on my watch.

My clock has engraved pattern and cut-through timing scales. I'm experimenting on the wooden material, and the settings that I used for the laser cutter were not ideal...

Audrey Yeoh - I designed this clock to try to replicate cracks that you would see in a brittle material such as Acrylic. Similar to glass, it cracks easily and when it starts cracking, it doesn't stop. I tried centering the nucleus of the crack where the clock kit sat to show the weakest point on the material, yet adding additional cracks to make it feel natural. I chose a clear Acrylic material to allow the cracks to show through more, whilst applying scoring, engraving, and cutting techniques in the project.

I really wanted to make my clock have a very simple, modern, sleek look to it, so the detailing is an engraved circle around raised numbers and lines, representing the sun's rays, coming out from it.

I decided to create a very clean, modern clock with all straight edges. I originally wanted to cut the clock out of plywood but ultimately decided that the black acrylic worked better for the sleekness of the design. I engraved the 12, 3, 6, and 9 while all the other numbers are cut out, and the lines on the clock face are scored.

My clock was designed to adhere to a modern school of design, and has engraved tick marks to denote time.

My clock serves as a gift to one of my membership educators from Omega Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. I included a symbol of the sorority (the sunflower) as well as a phrase she would often say.
