First Iteration

When beginning to brainstorm for my corkscrew handle designs, for my first iteration I focused more on ergonomic designs that would be easier to grip and help the process of actually using a corkscrew. I realized that this type of ergonomic design would be more helpful for a more traditional corkscrew rather than the type of corkscrew design seen with two handles in the upper left hand corner below.

In the past when I have used a more traditional simplified corkscrew, it has been quite difficult to twist the corkscrew into the cork and to pull the handle to get the cork out due to the very simple, generic shape of that type of corkscrew. I played around with the idea of adding finger grooves, knuckle spaces, and curvature to account for an easier grip around the palm area of the hand.

I then selected one of the designs that could be modeled well with industrial-type clay, since the more dainty designs would be relatively difficult, that displayed all of the attributes I wanted to incorporate in my overall design.

Below are some more detailed rendered sketches of the anticipated final product.

Clay Work

Overall I was pleased with the final outcome. I would have liked to have made the finger grooves deeper in some aspects, but the way the acrylic base was angled inside inhibited me from removing any more clay in those areas.

Below are some progress shots as well as a final shot of the first iteration.

Second Iteration

I finished my first iteration for the redesigned corkscrew handle relatively early, so I began to create a second iteration that was more aesthetic and less functional.

Thus, the second design became the shape of a shark. Below are preliminary sketches, to get an idea of the basic shape and curvature of the animal.
