Skill Investigation: Crochet

Made by mbrownin

At first I wanted to crochet a small blanket, but I couldn't decide on one stitch to use so I decided to learn a few different stitches to see which one I like the best.

Intention

My intention in this investigation was to learn new crochet stitches so that I could figure our which ones I liked the look of and could decide which ones to incorporate into a future project. I tried a ribbed stitch, a basket weave stitch, and the arcade stitch (which was by far my favorite). I also wanted to learn about how stitches are thought of.

Process

The first stitch I did was a simple ribbed stitch. The way that this stitch is worked is as a half double crochet, but each row is worked only into the back of the previous one so it kind of zig-zags back and forth and gets a ribbed effect.

The second stitch I tried was a basket weave stitch. This one was very difficult for me because you had to work into the posts of the previous row, and sometimes you had to work behind your previous stitches. However, it was a good way to practice the double crochet and I think the stitch itself looks really nice.

The final stitch I learned was the arcade stitch. I thought that I would get frustrated with this stitch as it involved a lot of counting, but it ended up being my favorite stitch and I actually went back and tried it again once I finished my first sample. The second time, I used the same yarn that I had dyed using tea to give the sample an ombre effect. I especially liked this stitch because it had a mixture of chain stitches, single crochet, and double crochet so I didn't get too bored of doing the same stitch for a long time.

In the end, I made four samples and wrote out the stitch patterns so I could reference that if I want to make a larger project in the future. Below are some pictures of the process and the outcomes.

Reflection

I really enjoyed making these samples and delving into the world of crochet. I think next time I try a new stitch I would get chunkier yarn and a larger needle so I could see where I was meant to be a little better. I would like to try crocheting something circular next time as well, or modifying a stitch a little to see what happened, rather than just following the instructions for the stitch.
