The Breathing Blobs

Made by Pedro Veloso and David Perry

The breathing blobs complement the conventional lighting switch in order to help the users to develop good habits regarding energy consumption. The blobs analyze the lighting and occupancy conditions of a room in order to promote changes. They move, emit lights and sounds to display the effort of the lighting system and therefore to engage people to save energy. They rest when everything is balanced or the system is off.

The Goal:

Technology is designed to be convenient and streamlined, which has resulted in highly functional systems which disguise or hide all energy usage. The goal of this project was to create a form which makes people aware of the work buildings and spaces do for them.

The Form:

Our form focussed on articulating the power consumption of interior artificial lighting. Installed into the wall next to a switch, this form would come to life as the light turned on -- relaxing and beating slower as more occupants entered the room and distributed power consumption between many users.
