Dream Traces

Made by Brooke Sachs · UNLISTED (SHOWN IN POOLS)

Smell can trigger emotional memory more strongly than any other human sense. Can it be used to help people remember their dreams? Sleep tracking software in fitness watches will help identify when a person is dreaming, which will automatically trigger a subtle release of an aroma. At waking, the scent will be released again as a gentle reminder of the dream from the previous night.

I am interested in expanding the ways people interact with digital devices and also exploring applications of calm computing and ambient technologies. While sleep health is fast becoming crowded with various IoT solutions, scoping to just dreams felt unique.

There are a number of connected devices available today which use scents to help people either fall asleep or wake up. There are mobile apps which act as dream journals or that provide visual and auditory cues before falling asleep in order to embed dreams - in either case, the user must initiate the activity.

The proposed device will use the biofeedback from a smartwatch or fitness tracker to determine sleep patterns - and identify when dreaming is most likely to occur.

The connected dispenser will then release a small amount of scent during the dream cycle. Upon waking, the dispenser will release a second small burst of scent to gently reawaken the memory of the dream.

This product is meant to be a novel way to help people remember their dreams through the novel use of scents, in a way that feels unobtrusive and automatic.
