PROJECTtwo - Porous Entity

Made by P. Zach Ali

3D Model and 3D Print a ‘Porous Entity’. Create a Closed Polysurface, with a Volume less than or equal to (4) cu. in. Edit and customize your Model to exhibit Porous Qualities. Prepare the Geometry in Catalyst EX.

I designed a self-intersecting mobius strip. It is about 3.5 inches long. Printed on the Dimension 1200 SST printer.

I modeled these dice in Rhino and then 3D printed them. After that, I sanded them and plan on spray painting them.

I designed a watering can concept inspired from the shape and curves of leaf. The leaf shape can best be seen from the side profile.

I designed a funk ring which sits nicely on my index finger and is a nice complement to my black watch.

I designed a set of dice whose numbers are not indents but holes that extend into the dice, so the inside is an interconnected array of tubes.

This is from a 3D model I made in Maya, which is mostly used for 3D animation. I had to print it on its side because of how the model was made--if it were printed from the bottom, there would be gaping holes in the sliced portion.

For some reason, I really wanted to use the FlashForge Creator to print this project. It probably would have been easier to just use a Cube, and easiest to just submit a file for the Dimension printer. That said, I liked using the FlashForge because I got (read: needed to) to experiment with the settings and try several times before achieving an okay print. The shape I made was supposed to be reminiscent of the large pipes that an organ makes sound through. These images, however, show an incomplete version of that-- several nights for the past week or so, I've set a file to print on the FlashForge and in the morning found the print to have failed for some reason or another. That said, I believe my most recent try (tonight) will be a success, and, should it be, I will update this post with it. Also, I modeled the design in Rhino and used MakerBot Desktop to prepare the file for printing.

I created a .75 in x 3 in rectangular prism with holes that extend through the entire object on all sides. Thus, the interior is an array of interlocking tubes. The black prism was my initial test, followed by the green prism which shows the interior. The white prism is my final project.

I created a cool container to put little things inside of. I experimented a lot with Rhino and made several different options, but ended up going with this simple design with soft spikes.

I designed and printed the anchor of an escapement - anchor gear unit commonly found in mechanical clocks. The anchor and escapement gear work in unison to create the classic tic-toc sound heard from mechanical clocks, which also drive the clock. They have to be very precisely design such that there is little loss in energy every time the anchor hits the escapement gear. Every hit represents a tic or toc which relates to a second (sometimes half a second) passing. There were holes cut out of my anchor gear so as to reduce the weight and further reduce energy loss in the system, but the braces, much like those on a bridge, still give the anchor the strength to withstand each collision.

I like Lego, so I imitate the model and pictures that I found online (http://www.robertcailliau.eu/Lego/Dimensions/zMeasurements-en.xhtml) to create my own Lego blocks. Besides, I added a semi-ring like part on the side of the block so that it will be easier for me attach it to cellphone or key rings :)

I designed a box to house several components for my capstone project. The project is a grocery basket that makes the shopping experience more efficient by providing a mobile self checkout. Learn more at our site: https://www.ece.cmu.edu/~ece549/spring16/team19/website/

I created a small model of a futuristic race car from a series that I'm a fan of; it's intentionally lower-poly to suit the style of the series.

For this project I made a 3D sierpinski's triangle. It is a recursive shape I really enjoy, especially in its 3D form.
