For our mixes, we decided to change the level of indeterminacy of the final mix not by changing the algorithm for mixing the songs, but by changing the original compositional choice of what songs we were going to play, with increasing levels of chance for each mix. For the first mix, we all chose the same song, for the second we all chose songs in prescribed tempo ranges, and for the third each person chose a song of their own choosing without the other’s knowledge. For the first, there is a low level of change and low level of indeterminacy. For the second there is a slightly higher level of chance, as we could pick any song within that tempo range, and a slightly higher but still low level of indeterminacy. For the third there was the highest level of indeterminacy, as it was more random for the final group mix, and a slightly higher level of chance than the first mix, as there were no prescribed tempo ranges, but still pretty low as it was our own choice. There was additional entropy in our recording sessions due to ambient noise from people and echo from CFA where we were sitting and recording, along with a laptop issue which affected one of the recordings.
Sending and receiving emails is a seemingly quick and effective way to contact someone who's schedule is unknown or different from one's own. However, once emails start piling up, how much time is spent actually reading, sorting through, and responding to emails?
Inside the UC, it is always packed with people looking for a place to sit, especially during the lunch hours when people are trying to find a place to eat. We would like to make it simpler to find a place to sit during these times without the hassle of running around back and forth looking for an empty table. Our idea was to implement small, non-disruptive, green lights above each table to indicated whether or not someone is there. If the table is occupied, motion and weight sensors will pick up on this and change the light to red. Otherwise, the light remains green, so people can know where there's someone there.
In order to integrate all of our personal media representations into a final composition, we decided to dissect and re-incorporate the most striking and most meaningful portion of each of our personal representations into one piece of media, instead of incorporating each piece of media as a separate entity. The rationale for this approach was that while each of us chose a piece of media to reflect each individual as a person, as a group we become more than just separate entities together, but a completely different whole made up of the most important or meaningful portions of ourselves that contribute to the group goal. The first media representation selected was a video from an app that incorporates gregorian religious music with timed geometric animation, from which we used the music in our panorama video. This represents Amber Jones, who defines herself by her love of the composition of music, sound, and technology in beautiful and meaningful combinations. The second media representation chosen was an image of the glass ceiling of the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, by Judy Han. She describes her life now as a combination of discrete blocks of interests and commitments, symbolized by the discrete and differently sized and colored flowers. She hopes to incorporate all of her interests into a fulfilling life like the integrated and finished glass piece. The next piece of media was an image chosen by Amanda Marano of a painting of flowers and hummingbirds overlaid by a white circuit diagram that incorporates her love of technology and her major in ECE and her love of traditional beauty. From these we incorporated a white circuit diagram overlaid over the glass flower image that panoramas through Amber’s musical choice. The last media representation was chosen by Zach Halle, a gif that we incorporated to the beat of the music over our panorama image. He chose this because of his love of mathematical and programming tools, which work together to create interesting patterns and mesmerizing movement on screen.
