Rebound, remix and rework a meme as part of a team. Take turns to iterate and augment a piece of spreadable media in teams of three. Each person will have 30 minutes to edit the meme and pass to the next person in line. Independently reflect on the outcome.

Your documentation is good and clear.
I don’t feel the compositions really found a voice until the last shot. It’s funny and a great advancement of the ideas.
Before this the remixes seem safe, and a little staid. They don’t really say much, they just add a basic element. You could definitely have pushed harder. For example the text is left untouched for 3 volleys, this could have been a great thing to remix and explore. Try to take more creative risks!
Cats on the internet. Always a great meme!
For me, Layer 4 is where it gets really interesting - it adds a voice to the conversation. But it’s immediately removed. The knives a real departure and I can’t understand the connections or statements that are trying to be made. Don’t forget to reveal your creative decisions in the documentation!
The statements at the end are revealing for me. You’ve discussed and agreed a response in the group slack and I wonder if you’re really getting to authentic, creative responses. You know what’s coming and can prepare for it - there’s no radical departures, no creative frictions. And I think this effected the richness of the outcome and the creative dialog you could have had? Participatory forms have fundamentally unexpected outcomes. Embrace it!
Wow! Shia LeBouf is REALLY loud.
Opening serve: A good choice of audio meme. LeBouf has been mixed and remixed so many times there’s a lot of opportunity here to play on a familiar meme.
Responses: The violin is a really interesting addition tonally. It definitely changes the texture of the composition. From here the compositions get a little busy. I’m not sure they really start a conversation across media but instead experiment with the addition of new content. It would have been great to think more about the narrative being developed? How does the media relate to it and how is it intentional and purposeful. For example, why is the history of japan used as an audio track - how does it relate to Shia LeBouf?
It ends up feeling like a lot of audio jammed together.
It was a bit of a missed opportunity not to try to work with the LeBouf statements more directly. How could you add other phrases or words to tell an audio narrative ? The ‘Do It’ is a great phrase that you could push against in lots of ways.
A minute of audio is also a lot to work with and remix. Adding heavier constraints to start would probably have helped a lot (5-10 seconds is a lot easier to remix than 1 minute).
The documentation itself is really clear and I really appreciated the reflection you added too.
The conceit that Trump is a "a living, breathing meme" is phenomenal starting point. It’s a great statement.
Open serve: Cutting and surreal. Can’t stop looking at it. A great starting point that doesn’t get caught up in obvious starting points / low hanging fruit.
Responses: Layer two advances the idea but places it in a totally new context. Nice progression. Layer 3: Maybe a little more of an obvious connection but I like the composition. Perhaps shifting hitter to the left a little would give a little more balance (it seems a little weighted towards the right). There’s also more room to play on the downfall meme too. For example, add the well known remixed subtitles to make Hilter repeat Peter’s speech, agree with it or extend it. Layer 4 is perhaps too radical a departure; while conceptually well developed, I think I’d find it hard to push back against this. Try to leave a little meat on the bones for a response.
Great work over all. The documentation is really clear too.
I think you did a great job with the documentation - it’s really clear how this unfolded and why you made the responses you did. Your process is excellently revealed and easy to follow.
The opening volley: A good choice of meme to start with really helped. It’s A familiar and instantly recognizable meme giving the next people in the line a clear framework for their response. The text though is perhaps a little generic and could be stronger - a statement that really starts a conversation.
Responses. The responses are excellent. Nice connection to potato jesus (but add a link in the documentation!). Great statement - an in keeping with the content. Clever. Jared’s response. Brilliant. Game set and match.
I also really liked how you came full circle with the meme - a great way to round out the match! Nice work.
The choice of audio is great here and gives you a lot to work with. It’s a good choice of meme because it can be reworked in so many ways.
As it evolves I think you found more opportunities in playing with the words more so than the audio itself. And this was definitely the right direction. The call and response aspect found in Layer 5 is a great way of reworking phrases into a more interesting outcome. And Sohail’s final response is a clever return to the original meme.
However, without explanation this isn’t obvious from the audio itself. If you were to take this further how do you think you could make it clear from the audio alone what you’ve done?
I also think the starting track might have been too long to remix well in the responses. It might have helped to really cut this down. The mixes get a little messy and busy but you recognize this and cut it down during the match which was a great decision. From a technical perspective, pay attention to audio levels when mixing tracks - make sure both samples match up other wise they clash.
Your reflection at the end is great btw.
The first two shots are extremely strong. Great response from Matthew in particular. You keep the colors and extend them into new meme territory but it feels like a big departure. Why the sudden change?
Really like the opening volley. It starts from a place that invites a conversation and a fun response. It’s also really familiar and instantly recognizable as a meme giving the next people in the line a clear aesthetic framework to use in creating their response. Not only that but it’s just playful and fun. And this sets up the dialog that follows. The conversation evolves nicely; and it’s really funny. Great work.
I like how it leans into meme aesthetics and keeps it rough as a way of quickly producing - it feels like a meme you’d find on the internet and this is great. But it doesn’t feel like it really developed into a real conversation. For example, layer 4 pushes the thread into a new visual context but keeps the concept going, moving it forward. Layer 4 immediately switches back to the previous instead of really pushing into the new space. This was a real opportunity to riff and push into a new visual form instead it feels like a bit of a retreat and a missed opportunity to end up somewhere really unexpected at the end.
The reflections highlight some of the challenges you faced in reworking the concept so I think you’re aware of it, but it’s something to think about for future work.
Good choice on the content. Not only is it popular enough but its widely covered on YouTube and remixed by lots of artists too. It’s a great starting point.
The audio ends up getting to an interesting place, but it feels like there was a bit of a struggle in the middle.
It feels like less of a conversation through audio (response/rebuttal) and an exploration of the audio itself. That’s not a bad thing, but I think there’s a few ways you could have set up the workings of the group.
For example, “Hello” is such a powerful word and Adele’s song is really recognizable. Taking a call and response style could have been a great framework. The whole ‘remix’ could be adding to a literal conversation that starts with the ‘Hello’, What would the next person add as a response? And so on and so forth.
Keeping constraints on the length of audio would also make it much easier to rework. 30 seconds is pretty long to edit effectively in just 30 minutes! Keeping it to 5 or 10 seconds would allow you to go further in that time. Worth thinking about!
Overall its a good experiment. But I think a plan of attack would have really helped you coordinate by setting up some rules for how you remix the content with each round.
The selection of the Hope Poster is great and terrible at the same time. On one hand, it’s an iconic, recognizable image that’s been worked and reworked by many many people - perfect material for this assignment. On the other, it’s a tough one to rework in just 30 minutes. It’s complex in its use of color, background subtraction, posterization, etc. I think you felt this as you got further into it.
For the first shot, it’s a missed opportunity that you didn’t immediately extend the image. It could have been a great opportunity to set up a direction for the next person and take control of the visual conversation that unfolded.
Layer #2 is a great response. A sharp addition that builds on remix culture and popular memes. From here the conversation really develops and ends with a real punch.
The conversation builds, you can see a playful dialog between each of the team members. This is great. The shortcomings really lie with the visual aesthetics - it gets messy really fast. Don’t be afraid to take stuff out, simplify or rework previous persons additions - this often happens with memes too .
Overall, really nice work on this assignment.
There’s a nice progression throughout. Shot #2 is an excellent response - using another meme to respond to a meme is clever and sharp. It also works really well because of the simplicity - easy to composite in the time available.
Some of the concepts could be pushed a little further and a stronger narrative or critical voice could be developed. e.g. the leap to time travel seems like a big departure conceptually.
The documentation itself is thorough and easy to follow. There’s a few small tweak you could make to improve it. For example, adding the Giphy for shot #8 as an inline embed as opposed to a link would be great. Or adding bullets / better formatting for the sources too.
The Obama to Yao Ming transition starts this off with a hilarious contrast, and then moves to a series where each image builds off of the previous in a comical way. I really like what you all did here.
This made me laugh. I really liked how each image built off of the previous in some way, making it funnier in the process. I also liked the surrealistic approach to some images, which ties into his rather nonsensical policies on many issues. Overall, very well done.
I like your work cuz it perfectly portrays my everyday life. I believe many CMU students can build connections with your meme.Good Job!!
I often use YaoMing face during chats with my friends, so the meme you guys created is really familiar to me. I like the progression through the layers and your ideas and inspiration on each of the layers. Good Job!
This was a really interesting project; it was strange how the different influences and styles overlapped one another; the entire thing made me feel slightly unsettled, just because I'm so used to hearing Adele's "Hello" and her sad and melodious voice, but this entirely changed the mood and the setting of the words and the song, to something more sinister and startling. I liked the beat addition in Layer #4; it really seemed to bring the different ideas together cohesively.
This was really entertaining! I love how the ideas fed off each other and how, even though the context changes, a lot of the moral/ethical question remains (from the original trolley question). I loved the infusion of pop culture (Disney) because it accurately reflected how memes change on the internet in reality. It's oftentimes that a single phrase or slice of an image makes it through to internet fame; this really reflects that process.
In addition to mocking Trump, your images somehow perfectly encapsulate the essence of this election, the year 2016, and maybe even internet culture as a whole. I'm extremely impressed. It's like modern day Dada.
This is a very interesting composition that you guys have come up with. I like how it started out with bringing two memes out of their original contexts and into one that was very mundane. To me your image progression feels very much like some sort of commentary on meme culture -- maybe like, an anti-meme -- then something that's played straight. So it's quite a unique direction that you went in, which is pretty cool to think about.
I really like the progression of this meme. You guys literally layered the meme with your responses which I found to be really cool and the re-captioning was pretty nice too. I would have liked to have seen the meme go in a more unpredictable direction. While the layering was cool, seeing the other directions it could've gone would have been interesting to see. But overall, good job.
What a jump in style when I moved my eyesight from Obama which is a bit serious to Yao Ming HAHAHA! It's just so funny. I think it is hard to make a person recognizable with limited details, but you made it! I believe the posters are appealing and successful.
This series is really funny! I think that you have really got one of the central ideas of memes, which is to relate to people's lives and to make them laugh. These all feel so familiar, especially for CMU students. The documentation also clearly conveys your thoughts. Great job!
This is superb! I really like the use of Doge as a tennis ball. I feel like it truly captures the aesthetic of meme tennis perfectly. It kept getting crazier and crazier, and I think the final volley had some real pay off that made it well suited as the final product.
It is an awesome idea to choose Doge to work on because it is so funny. Even though it looks funny, you guys have smoothly integrated it into different images to create stories. I like the comic tail thing which makes the pictures dynamic.
I really liked the progression from the original meme. I like how it started with simple edits like captioning and then progressively moved into more drastic re-contextualizations. I really enjoyed the final layer where it just memed the previous layer with the original photo. Overall I found the volleys very entertaining as they responded to one another. Good job!
Hi! I like the surrealness of these images a ton. It seems that following volleys ended up taking the previous picture in a completely new direction. Its really entertaining and cool!
The layers just got more and more ridiculous, which is one of the reasons spreadable memes are spreadable. And in general I'm just very impressed by the photoshopping skills everyone in this team has. You guys utilized your awesome skills to keep the storyline going. I enjoyed looking at this project. Great job!
This project clearly reflects how people are crazy about animals' facial expressions resembling those of humans. In each of the images, the grumpy cat is personified to deliver a message, and that's a great use of the resemblance of the grumpy cat to a grumpy human, and shows why grumpy cat is so popular. Good job!
Good job with making people smile! I loved how I could look at each layer of your project, sympathize with it and laugh. Your meme makes use of the sponge bob image very effectively and tried to figure out why it would have this weird expression on its face. I loved it!
The way you present spongegar in the same manner but within completely different scenarios is truly funny and interesting. Moreover, you base your work on the daily life on campus, and that makes me feel instantly intimate to your work. Very good job!
Your meme project is so adorable! I like how you made the cat the center of your whole meme and kept it throughout the whole process. The variations are interesting too, applying the cat image and putting it into many different kinds of posters that are part of spreadable media. I love your outcome!
I really like your the choice of your core meme - Donald Trump, especially due to yesterday night’s presidential debate. Looking at your works remind me of Trump’s well-known ideas like "Build a Wall" and "Make America Great Again”, and the way you use comic and cartoon-style satire is very funny. Thanks a lot for bring me so much laughter.
I really enjoyed your memes as well as your documentation! They are so amusing! Almost all of your volleys are based on your life at CMU, and they are so entertaining since I personally have had similar experience as you did and I can totally understand what each meme is talking about. I appreciate the way you use humorous texts instead of sophisticated techniques to create each image, because that is how exactly memes are virally spread among people. Good job!
I am impressed by how you keep adding new elements to previous images and finally make it a nice remix of the kid, the cats and more importantly, different ideas. I think you all did a great job analyzing the meme from your own understanding! I really like the last layer themed "but cats don't care". where you create amusing contrast between Pusheen's eagerness for a goldfish and the contempt from the rest of the cats.
I would suggest that you put more emphasis on the interaction between the kid and the cats since they now seem to be two separate figures. I am really curious about the conversations between them!
It is very interesting that since the meme you guys chose to work on, Donald Trump, is "a living, breathing meme" as described, the spread and reproduction the memes didn't rely on one single image. Instead, the series focused on one theme but dealt with several different "Donald Trump"s. And I really love that your reproductions altered the composition drastically, which gave the reproductions new context, more than annotations.
I really love how you guys play around and satire the spread, interpretation, and mass reproduction of memes by actually spreading, interpreting and reproducing memes. The documentation of your thought processes and reflections demonstrates this and the project as a whole is an intriguing piece of artwork. =)
This entertained me a lot. This team meme conveys complex attitudes toward politics and Trump. From the Trump's disarranged face to the composition of him in the frame with comic background and a guys saying things about politics, there are exaggerations and satires, alteration and combination. Therefore the progression looks dramatic and vibrant.
This is great work in photoshop, I must say. The idea is very continuous amongst the group members and everyone seemed to follow a pattern using the doge ball and having it go farther and farther from its origin. It tells a story and that is very intriguing given the task at hand. I really enjoyed this project.
I really like what you guys have done with this piece! I think its even better considering the project went in full circle back to the original. I definitely got a good chuckle out of this one. Now for the technical aspects, I applaud you for using photoshop and taking the time to edit these images together in a tasteful (and still hilarious) fashion. Well done!
Nice meme! Each composition flows well from the previous one, and your documentation does a good job of explaining the changes you made. Additionally, this shows a deep understanding of the work it's based on, especially the last layer which brings it back to the original meme. This sounds like something I would expect to hear on YouTube as a nutshack remix.
This is definitely one of the stranger and more interesting outcomes of this project. I found it interesting how the earlier layers had intense impact on the final project (layer 1, for example, set the core sample of the piece) and the later layers were used for "polish" as you put it. Also, even though you say in the reflection that not much thought was put into the overall direction of the piece, I think that there was at least a mutual desire to bring turn piece into a darker direction. So, in this sense, the groupthink informed a broader direction at least.
This project was really interesting to listen to! I think you all were really creative with the way you manipulated the original song, by adding other songs and then adding unifying beats and transitions. I also like that you used a song that was really popular and recognizable, and made it into something really different. Great job using audacity too! I would agree with the other comments that the end results sounds quite ominous and nightmarish, even if this might not have been your original intention, which shows how remixing can do easily change the meaning of familiar songs or images.
I really liked how creative you all were with not only the content of the last person's work, but the ideas and themes of them. The transition from tennis ball, to shooting star, to alien was well done and really funny to see and read about. Great work!
This project was really entertaining to look at! I like how you guys were really creative with the situations you inserted spongegar in, and also how personally relatable they were (the TA one is hilarious and so so true). In addition, I think you demonstrated a good handle on the technology you used to create the memes, and had a clear theme and goal in your project. Nice job!
I like how the picture gets filled by different kinds of elements as people start to put their layers on. There seems to be a story evolving from the original picture. I especially enjoy the transition from cats to cats with chewing gum, from a peaceful image with cats to a moment when cats suddenly got scared and knifes pops up into the image. Those dynamic changes are based on the existing content and completely changed the current theme in an interesting way. You guys' ability to apply this transition correctly really make this group work a great project.
You began the meme remix with an original image - original in the sense that I haven't seen it used as the basis of a viral meme yet. Similar to the "Bad Luck Brian" meme where a recurring image is accompanied by various messages around a central theme (his bad luck in that case) you establish a perceived central theme around the child pictured in your project. This shows your meme comes with a power.
The sequential layering of objects is a pragmatic approach to meme remixing, and allowed me to see distinctly the progress of the project. Because you used two very recognizable images I was hooked to see in which direction you take your project from that starting point.
I like how you have combined several memes in this project. It turns out to be well blended. Each layer adds in something that is both tied with the previous layer and individualistic. It shows how memes are spread since people take in existing memes and remix them to reflect their own understanding of the memes. The only thing is that the background looks a little empty to me and maybe you can mix in some memes there.
I like the delve into the surreal and how you related it to real life through Trump. I think you've shown that memes and spreadable media can not only be used for humor, but also for spreading ideas or making political statements. When each rework happened, a new idea was added, and the meme became more complicated in its message, perhaps bordering on too complicated before it was simplified again at the end. Overall, neat idea and I enjoyed watching it play out.
I like that you played with the idea of imperfect reproduction and consumerism, sort of mixing them into a weird and cute image. You took recognizable images and memes (Success Kid and Pusheen) and remixed them to both make a statement and just be funny. In the end, I might have liked to have seen a bit more playing with the remixing rather than just layering on top. Perhaps playing with the ideas and making them slightly less literal? Either way, the end product is cute, and it was fun to watch the image evolve.
I liked this meme tennis; you all were able to add to the previous picture without deviating. You did it subtly enough that there was room for others to continually improve. I think each image produced is funny in its own way, which is pretty hard to achieve. When I saw that Yao Ming was the second image, I didn't think it would continue, but it did. Nice.
I thought it was interesting how you stayed with Trump throughout the whole thing. For a moment, I thought it would be derailed but then we have a clever return in layer #5, showing how unpredictable memes are (making them humorous). The base image was great as well.
I liked this because it wasn't a meme I had heard of or seen before but once I saw all the remixes and volleys it was really easy to understand. I think most of the volleys were very well done in response to previous ones, and the "full circle" concept is also very interesting.
I like the concept of using Donald Trump himself as a meme. Instead of singling out an action of his, or certain parts of him (hair, etc) as a meme, he is examined as a complete figure with all of his strengths and flaws out for display. The images were re-contextualized very well because they pertain to pop culture and other memes, which is a good quality of a meme.
Interesting loop you guys have worked around here, where the first and last images contain the same direct joke from the "y tho" meme but on slightly different subjects: the main distinction between the two is that the last volley use4s the meme to refer to itself, which points out that "y tho" can be used as a punch line to itself, implying this regression and volley could be infinite without technically reducing to absurdist humor.
I love me some trolley problems. Few current memes offer as much expressive creativity in use as the classic "do you pull the lever?" prompt since it has so many slightly tweakable elements. As such, you can see we ended up with a bunch of completely different yet mechanically similar volleys. In addition to that, you can see clearly how each person involved tackled a different angle. Dope execution.
I love this! It's very creative and the entire team took some really bold steps in their work, which comes together in a great way. I love the use of pop culture and how you re-contextualize the image. I also like that the final product is so far removed from the original- it goes to show the amount of work that went into changing the image.
I do wish that there were some subtler work or message in a layer, but the very obvious message in every layer does accentuate your bold visual choices.
It's very cute! I like that the image has some sort of cohesion in its composition- muted tones and cute things go together well.
I do wish there were more experimentation in your edits: the vast majority of the layers simply do that: add a layer to the composition. I'd like to see things that completely repurpose the previous image.
I really like your creativity! The third layer made me laugh so hard. It is interesting to turn some philosophical problem into a funny, spreadable meme. Good work!
I wasn't previously familiar with this meme, which makes me think it's very new, very obscure, very dank, or some mix of the three. Though you really built off of the memes well to make a thematic progression! It evolved very naturally and smoothly. Very effective.
I thought it was great that you took inspiration from experiences that are very relatable to CMU students in your memes! Overall this works very well, though on a couple (1 and 6 mostly) I felt that while the subject was relatable, caveman spongebob didn't capture how those situations make me feel. I'd be more likely to go with something that shows terror rather than animal instinct.
Your team's development of meme was hilarious and I loved it! Especially the last move where you put the y tho guy next to the 5th layer is very funny and creative at the same time. The sarcastic way of expressing idea really caught my eye. Nice job:)
Each image has its own uniqueness but share the same subject. I really like the strong contrast of colors of the cat. It's even better since you merge the cat with famous memes. These seem like they are worth sharing with other people. Nice job:)
I was really surprised by the dramatic changes that you made between layers. Even so, everything revolves around the idea of tennis and doge which is great. I also liked that there is some connection between iterations, for example between the telescope layer and the universe layer. Overall good work!
TRIGGERED THAT'S NOT SPONGEGAR (It's caveman spongebob)
On a more serious note, I enjoyed the progression of caveman spongebob here, especially in how relatable the dilemmas were to CMU students. It also pointed out some of the issues with stress culture in a humorous way.
That Yao Ming Nope picture made me laugh so hard LOL. I like how you put new elements onto previous images to change the way Yao Min looks, especially that the last image doesn't look like him at all. I also think that the title of your project is really dope. Good Job!
LOL I really like your work! I like how that doge ball appears in almost every picture and how your background changes from a tennis court to One Punch to time travel. This is really cute and entertaining. I also found the documentation really well written, I used yours as a reference when I was writing mine ;p GREAT JOB!
The graphic design on the images is very strong. Each one has a clear message, and it is obvious what the original political concept is as well as how you remixed it. You did a good job sticking with a central theme of "cats as political rulers", and each piece brings something new to the idea.
It was super interesting to hear these remixes. The Hello/Goodbye contrast was humorous, and it definitely changed the meaning of the original song. I also really enjoyed the beat pattern added in Layer #4. My favorite part about this project was how different volleys played with the pauses in the original song - either by adding in beats, editing in snippets from other songs, etc. By the final volley, the original song was quite distorted, and I saw it as a dark remix of the original "Hello".
I found this sequence of spongegar memes really funny and relatable. I definitely enjoyed how many of the situations described were ones that we've all experienced at one time or another. It also really shows how easily you can manipulate popular memes to target a specific audience - for example, the 15-112 volley is something that students here at CMU have generally experienced, while it would mean close to nothing to someone outside of our university.
For Layer #1, changing the pitch really makes the song sounds very different and interesting. Also, if the creator had not pointed it out, I wouldn’t have found out that the audio actually was a mix of two different songs (smooth transition! ). And for layer #2, it is also very creative to design a conversation between two songs! Also, adding other background tunes or features enhances the overall acoustic effect. But, to me, the style of the piece becomes a little weird and scaring after it has been slowed down and extended… Yet, overall, the effect you created is amazing and I think it’s fairly cool to work with audio media!
I enjoyed the series of SpongeGar Memes a lot. I mean, the cartoon figure itself looks very funny and it seems to be complaining about something with his “ugly” and protrusive mouth and those two cute little vampire teeth. The main reason that I like those memes a lot because I can feel direct connection to all those embarrassing situations included in the memes (although not necessarily happen to me, but I can certainly understand how frustrated it would be when waiting for TAs to help, how hectic it would be to have a week full of deadlines, how disappointed and even disgruntled when attending an event only for the free food but ended having nothing, and many other emotions involved). As those memes have aroused strong emotional feeling, I think the creators did an excellent job expressing themselves and delivering messages via the media!
I like the evolution of your memes! I actually laughed when I saw the Chairman Meow and Adolf Kitler. The connection between layer 1 and layer 2 was very clear and it felt like a natural evolution of the meme. I very much enjoyed your work
It was really cool seeing you guys build off of each other! I liked how your end result was completely different from the beginning. At the end, the result had no bearings to the original "pass me the aux" meme. I liked the creativity, and I think that you guys were successful in remixing each others memes
Entertaining project! You guys did a great job building on each other's work and furthering the overall piece. It's funny seeing where you guys ended up just 6 iterations after the beginning, and it was cool to see that process of development in your project. Also, well documented!
This was actually pretty fun to view. I think this project in particular has that "tennis" effect going on because instead of just building on each other's work, you guys actually tried to respond and one-up each other, and that conversation was entertaining to watch. Also, the original material was a cool idea to work with precisely because of all the things you could do with it and all the directions you could take it. Very good work!
These images showed a unique use of the grumpy cat meme. I enjoyed how well the layers built on one another. I felt that especially the change from layer 1 to layer 2 really showed how well one image can build on another, but still be different enough to consider it a powerful and entertaining meme on its own. I have always been a fan of this meme, and enjoyed seeing how it could be reworked. Great Work!
These images actually made me laugh out loud in my living room while viewing them. I really liked how not only did you use the same meme, but you kept the tennis doge image throughout all of the layers. Overall a very creative and entertaining meme creation. Good Work!
The Grumpy Cat Meme
At first when I saw the "Keep Calm and Obey" layer I immediately thought of the OBEY street art but I didn't choose to use it for 2 reasons: 1) I didn't feel as if it were a meme in the strictest sense and 2) I didn't want to use OBEY again (someone used it for their beg borrow steal). So I tried to find something that evoked the same sort of intimidating feeling and couldn't really think of a meme that fit that theme and I stumbled upon the Obama Hope poster meme. It didn't have the right feel but with the right grumpy cat image I felt like it easily could. I wanted to manipulate this meme to take it from a message of hope and inspiration and follow the intimidation and obey theme that I felt from the "Keep Calm" layer.
