"The success of a picture often depends on capturing those fleeting moments"
Our goal in this assignment was to experiment with varying levels of chance, indeterminacy, and entropy in creating a composition mixing four songs. We did this by changing our methods for picking the songs, and also by changing the method for mixing. This resulted in very interesting compositions that did reflect our design choices. We hope you enjoy what we have created!
As a CMU student, we usually feel that it is hard to balance our life and work. Like in freshmen year, students are not used to college life and normally put on weight which we know as "Freshmen 15". Therefore, time management becomes a serious problem to us. This project collects data from users' everyday life and visualizes the data in order to give feedback to help them make better time management plan. It is a mobile app, user should record how long they spend time on work, sleep and other each day. And the app will generate a map to visualize the data. Over some period of time, we can see our life pattern, for example, do we procrastinate or plan-ahead on work. This can help us solve problems and make better decisions to balance our life.
For many incoming students and visitors to CMU, it can be tough navigating their way to specific buildings on campus. The Mellon Institute might even be closer to Pitt. than CMU! There are also other aspects of CMU life that it would take a while for them to get used to. They might not know where and when the CMU shuttles pick up and drop off people. The buses down Forbes can be hard to catch due to their erratic schedule. They might not know all the dining places on campus, nor would they know which are the most busy and at which times. Also, there are many activities going on around CMU, hosted by various organizations but all of them are publicized in different manners, making it hard for students to keep track of all of them. What we want to do is design an interactive map kiosks, like the kind we see in some airports (See cover picture), that makes all this information available to users. Look at the additional documentation for detailed features of the interface.
The shoes we choose in the morning are the shoes that choose to get us where we know we need to go. It is a choice of personality and practicality (sometimes...). These shoes are imprinted with each one of us, and the journeys through which they have taken us.
In our approach to this project, we were searching for a way to show our different perspectives, while still incorporating aspects of ourselves that we have in common. We discovered that in our own shoes, we visit the same places each day without even knowing, and walk very similar paths. Each of us recorded three short video clips of different views in our lives: at home, walking to class, and at her favorite place in Pittsburgh. The videos start looking down at a favorite pair of shoes, then look up to the surroundings, just as we ourselves would look up. Our goal is to create a visually interesting collage of these video clips, while immersing the viewer in relatable views of our lives. Each column corresponds to a group member; the top row shows our homes, the second corresponds to walking to class, and the bottom shows our favorite places.
The song choice is a favorite of one of the group members, and when she shared it with the others they decided that it fits the story we are trying to tell. Information is always spread through sharing with others. One member shared with three others, who now share with all of you. It is a fun song by the Talking Heads, and we are a fun and colorful bunch. We are happy to share our group with you!
